- The new features are pretty cool:
- FPGA fully updatable via JTAG external programmer
- JTAG software automatically downloads individually signed updates from DriveKey server
- SPI fully updatable via DVD
- Fully configurable update blocker
- Fully configurable region override
- Enable/Disable DriveKey via the config menu
- Config option to autoboot Wii discs (insert the disc, the game will load immediately!)
Best of all, there is no need to burn/run a DVD to access the config options -- you just press the eject button 3 times and presto! The config system loads directly from the SPI Flash!
The DriveKey Modchip, along with FlatMii (ISO loader) is another breakthrough device in the Wii modchip world. The makers of the modchip are the same guys that brought you Wiikey v2, and D2pro, the 2 most popular modchips on the market before this was released.
All conventional modchips, before this, work in the same way. Modchlips like wiikey v2 utilizes a flaw in the security chip on the Wii. The issue with this method is that Nintendo keep on changing the DVD drives. The first was DMS, then D2B, D2C, D2C2, D2E...etc. It wasn't a major issue, because modchips like the wiikey v2 worked on all of these consoles, and with the aid of a solderless clip, installation was very easy. Then in Novemeber 2008, Nintendo started to put Epoxy glue over the security chip (pictured below). The Drive can still be modded, but not with a solderless clip. The epoxy needs to be heated to about 250+ degrees, and melted away. This is no easy task, and very easy to stuff up. At the same time, Nintendo in December 2008, start including what we call "D2Nothing drives" inside some wiis. Pictured below on the right, you can see that the security chip is totall missing - which means there is no where to put conventional modchips!

So...introducing the DriveKey Modchip!

Promo Video from us:
The DriveKey modchips works on DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C-2, D2E, D3/d2nothing drives, without using a "clip on security chip" method. This means epoxy doesn't matter at all.
The DriveKey clips between the "motherboard" and the Wii drive...Its just like a passthrough device. It allows you to perform your normal modchip functions, such as: Playing 100% of games from your region on backup media --- and playing 70% (from PAL to NTSC...maybe be higher or lower depending which region you are in) of other region games.
Wiiclip is a great product, BUT, the more mainstream it got, the better the clip got... but the more people seemed to stuff it up. Our fail rate went from about 1% to 5% or so. Way to high for us!.
Wiiclip depends on 2 wires touching each other -- Drivekey has a cable clip, which means (we are hoping) there will be no returns, and no problems with installation for anyone, including mums and dads!
The last advantage is that there is no need for you to provide us with with your region, or serial number. There is a little switch on the chip that you can configure depending on your your region type.
The drivekey was initially going to be a "low spec" product, but the team recalled all the intiail batch at the last minute and have beefed up the product to be the highest spec modchip ever released. The DriveKey can be upgraded via DVD, and via an external programmer, just like D2pro. The confguration options can now be accessed without a DVD, it boots directly off the modchip, which is first in the modchip world! Since the product is upgradable, the feature list can change at any time.
Here is a picture of the easy process

DriveKey, because of the way it works, will limit your DVD drive spinning speed to 3x. The normal Speed is 6x. Because the wii isn't that intensive on the graphics, it will not affect load times in game. It will make the Wii a bit fussier with backup media, but we see this as a good thing, as it will force you to use better quality media (like Verbatium) which will make your laser last longer.
