Its the first universal modchip for the Wii! See the Wasabi Modchip website for more details

Whats the history of this for far?
A random team calling themselves 'Team Wasabi' announced that they have a 6 wire modchip for D2C models lateish 2007. Everyone called BS (BullSh*t for people that don't know acronyms), including us. Mainly because the only solution at the time was the d2ckey, which is 30+ wires!

A couple months down the track, they have revised the chip a bit, added some wires, and increased the features. We want it, we wanted it pretty bad. Why? Because consumers stayed away from the D2ckey, and when the D2pro and Argon came out people thought in their heads 'ohh my, only half the wires - i can do that!'. Well....half of them couldn't. Half the people that buy a D2C modchip for a little home project end up screwing their wii up and buying a replacement drive.

This product is aimed at high volume installers that want to knock off an installation in a matter of minutes - or for the consumer that wants an easier install!

How easy is it?

D2A, DMS, D2B, D2B cut pins = 5 Wires! 2 of them power wires, and 3 on solder pads! Because they are using different points than every single other modchip there is no need to grind the IC down if your D2B IC has cut pins.

D2C = 9 wires only, including region free! That is 10 wires less than its closest competitor. 2 to power, 3 on the IC, 4 on pads.

Check the wasabi website for more details

Advantages over other mods?

Well, its easier for 1. It is also upgradeable via DVD. The positive is that you will not need to buy a $30 programmer to upgrade your modchip. Wasabi has also bought out this table to let people know what the differences are

Conclusion?

If you have been following the Wii modchip scene you would have seem that there are only 3 real commercial chips for D2B console, the Wiinja, CycloWiz and the Wiikey. All other commercial chips are just shitty software clones put on a new board! Clones have no support, and when Super Mario Galaxy came out, where where extremely busy desoldering all these other crappy chips that people had in their wii from other companies and putting real ones in. Wasabi is not only an original chip, but its totally different than any other mods out there, and we think that is a massive break through. The ability to mod your your D2B cut pin wii without grinding down the IC is huge, the ability to mod your D2C wii with less than 10 wires is bigger.

A little warning to all the DIYers out there. Although this installation is a lot easier it is still no easy for the average Joe. The IC which requires 3 pins to be soldered on is smaller than a 5 cent coin...small! You will need a decent soldering Iron that is either tempreature controlled, or <= 15W.

Price for us to buy this product is a little bit higher than d2pro/argon, but we will be supplying the mod at roughly the same price to encourage people to get back into wii modding.

Message from Wasabi

Wasabi is not your typical Wii drivechip. Apart from all the usual features you'd expect from any good chip (including a working built-in GC audiofix), it sets new standards on many points:
  • It's the first chip that works on all drives, from DMS to latest D2C drives (including GC2-D1A).
  • It's the first D2C compatible chip that is upgradable from DVD.
  • It's the easiest chip to install on D2C: only 9 wires, only 3 of them connected to a pin/via.
  • It's the easiest chip to install on DMS and D2B as well: No need to use a dremel or super-glue with "cut-pin" drives, and there's no pin/via to solder even with the latest D2B boards.
  • It's the first D2C compatible chip that is as clean as DMS/D2B drivechips: full control over the drive's firmware, no physical patching on the lines while the games are running. That means perfect stability, more control, and no stress on the drive's components.
  • Best of all, it's the first chip to include a decent amount of flash memory (128KB) for firmware and data storage.

Did you know that current ISO dumpers are currently missing a few KB of data stored in the barcode (BCA) and lead-in area ? This "extra" data could be read by the console and used to detect chips. SMG and SSBB are the first games to call one of the related drive commands, without interpreting the data yet. We take that as a warning. Thanks to on-board memory, the "extra" data of your whole game collection could be stored on the chip itself if that becomes necessary. The flash memory is also used to store the drivecode and could store patches and Wii/GC binaries in the future.
